Late Sunday afternoon, a police chase that began in Breckinridge County crossed into Meade County. The suspects continued across the Matthew E. Welsh Memorial Bridge into Harrison County, IN where it ended just outside Corydon, after spike strips were deployed on HWY 135 near its intersection with HWY 62.
WXBC is reporting that the Breckinridge County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Bruce Anthony stated that the pursuit began near Harned with a possible rolling domestic dispute. Anthony said the intitial pursuit was terminated due to conditions becoming unsafe, but a second pursuit began in the Irvington area where a cruiser was struck and speeds climbed to 100 mph.
At this point it crossed into Meade County and later into Harrison County. After the vehicle was disabled by the spike strips in Indiana, police were fired upon by an armed occupant in the vehicle. Anthony stated the armed female in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, and the armed male suspect was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital, according to WXBC.
Meade County Sheriff Philip Wimpee verified the chase did cross into Meade County, but once they found out what started the pursuit, his deputies were in a support role only. Wimpee stated they will pursue, but the information they received yesterday did not meet policy and procedure standards for the department to become actively involved in this particular case outside of providing support.
Brandenburg Police Chief Brian Haag echoed these statements in regards to his department's involvement. He stated they were in an assist only role in the pursuit. Sheriff Wimpee, Chief Haag, and Irvington Chief Brinkley all stated the case is being investigated by Harrison County Sheriff Nick Smith and all details would be released through his office. We have been unable to contact Sheriff Smith at this time, but we will update as new information is obtained.
