Greenwave Soccer back on top

For the last two years, the Meade County High School Greenwave Soccer team has been playing second fiddle to the Grayson County Cougars in the District 11 Championship game, and this year Meade made it a point to not let that happen again. Meade, hosting the District 11 Tournament, dominated Grayson in the District Championship game on Oct. 6, beating them 8-1 to bring home the District Trophy.

From the very first kick, Meade went straight on the attack. It only took Meade three minutes into the game for junior Zach Yates to score Meade’s first goal of the game, which set the tone for the rest of the game. After the Yates goal, senior Cater McCoy got a perfect cross pass in front of the goal to put a head on scoring easily to put Meade up by two in the first ten minutes of the game.

“I was really excited the way we started the game with Zach (Yates) getting that first goal, which he’s been trying to do all season, that really set the tone,” Head Coach Matt Pollock said of the teams fast start. “We worked all week about putting the ball in the right place at the right time, and Drew (Emig) put that ball on the backside where Cater (McCoy) could get his head on it to finish it. From front to back, we just played solid all night.”

Senior Brycen Schmidt put Meade up 4-0 after scoring a pair of goals midway through the first half. Schmidt’s first goal came after he beat a pair of defenders on a breakaway, and his second came on an indirect which froze the Grayson goalkeeper in his tracks as he watched the ball go past.

“I couldn’t have asked for much more from my senior year district final,” Schmidt said of the game. “I couldn’t be happier to score my 20th goal of the season in the district final. It was just awesome. The team is really clicking right now, and I think this game shows how good we really are, and can be, moving forward to regionals.”

After the half, Meade began playing concretively, protecting the back field but still attacking when they had the opportunity. After a penalty in the box, Meade was awarded a PK where senior Shane Seitz would give Meade the 6-0 lead.

Meade would go up 7-1 when senior Grayson Pollock scored, breaking Le’vi Stewart’s record of 41 for All-Time Goals scored, his 42nd career goal.

“You know when something like this happens you have a record on your name and everyone knows what you’re doing, but you also have to be the captain leader and help the team out,” Pollock said of the record. “You’ll eventually get your goal, but it’s about the team winning and that’s what we did here tonight. I am just happy we won District, we’ve been in a drought for the last two years and to win it here on our home field feels pretty awesome.”

Schmidt would finish the scoring for Meade with a hat trick to put Meade up 8-1 with just under five minutes left in the game, securing the District 11 title once more.

“We just had so many contributions tonight. Drew had a phenomenal night. Its just one of those nights where everything just went his way. I mean he had like three assists and scored. Brycen ended up with a hat trick and Grayson doing what he did. It was just a great night, and I couldn’t be prouder for them all, they earned this,” Pollock said of the team win after the game.
