Greenwaves outpace Cougars

On Feb. 4, the Meade County High School Greenwaves basketball team put their overtime loss to Breckenridge County behind them and moved on to their next challenge, the Grayson County Cougars. At the start of the game Meade seemed to have a new pep in their step, sinking baskets quickly to jump out to a seven-point lead before Grayson even scored a point. Grayson began to find their groove, as their defense tightened up on Meade to force turnovers, allowing them to slowly claw their way back into the game, where they finally tied the game at 9-9 with just under two-minutes left in the first. Meade slowed their offensive game play down allowing them to set up for one of their seniors, Parker Johnston, to get away from his defender to drive the middle where he dunk over another Grayson defender to spark a 9-0 run by Meade to finish out the first period with a seven point. For the remainder of the first half both teams continued to match each other basket for basket, allowing for Meade to carry their seven-point lead into the half leading 25-18.

After the half Meade came out of the locker room with the same vigor that they had at the beginning of the game to spread their lead to 11, but also like in the first period, Grayson slowly began to force Meade to make errors which turned into turnovers. Those turnovers allowed Grayson to find their rhythm and close the gap once again on Meade but could only get to within six-points of Meade as the third period ran out. Grayson carried their momentum that they had built in the third over to the beginning of the fourth. Midway through the last period Grayson cut Meade’s lead in half to get to within three-points, but Meade’s defense buckled down to force turnovers and use their fast break offense to build their lead back to eight. As time was running out, Grayson was forced to foul Meade players each time they had the ball, putting them on the foul line. Free throws are one area that Meade has been working on, and unlike the 46.7% they shot against Breck Co, this night they reached their goal and shot 73.3% which helped seal win for them.
