For the third straight year in a row, the Meade County High School Greenwave soccer team has had to play against the Grayson County Cougars for the District 11 Championship. Last season, Grayson County ended the Greenwaves’ championship winning streak at four in a row by defeating Meade with a score of 1-0 on Meade’s home field. With the District Championship Tourney being held at Grayson County High School this year, on Oct. 15, Meade was looking to return the favor by taking the championship trophy back. After a season that has only netted the Greenwaves one win, this would be the W that means the most, but the team has had its up and downs, so if they were looking to turn the page, this would be the game to start it all.
These two teams met earlier in the season back in September, and Grayson was able to come from behind to win the game 3-4 after Meade led most of the game. So, to say that Meade was definitely looking for a little payback would be an understatement. Both teams play aggressively, and each is good at looking to move the ball up the field using long passes, but Meade’s defense has improved immensely in being able to keep the ball in front of them, protecting their goalkeeper, and turning the ball right back over to their offense.
Meade fell behind in the first half when Grayson was able to get the ball behind the defense to get shots on goal. As hard as Meade’s defense tried, Grayson County’s speed was the factor that got them a 2-0 advantage before the half.
In the second half, Meade’s defense stepped up and did their job, staving off wave after wave of Grayson County’s attacks. Meade was finally able to get on the board with just under ten minutes remaining in the game with a free kick from junior Grayson Pollock to get to within one goal. Meade’s offense continued to mount attacks on the Grayson County defense, trying desperately to get the ball in the goal to tie the game. Meade out shot Grayson 5-13, and had eight corner kicks, but just could not find the back of the net to tie the game before time ran out. Meade would eventually fall to Grayson County for the second straight year by a score of 2-1.
