Joseph Paul “Tooter” Speaks


Joseph Paul “Tooter” Speaks, age 73, of Brandenburg, KY, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2020, at his residence.

Tooter was born July 3, 1947 in Mooleyville, KY, son of the late Joseph Corbett and Leta Lucille Pike Speaks. His son, Chris Speaks also preceded him in death.

Tooter was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving his country from 1966-1969. He was a Master Logger for 43 years with the Union Milling Company and was a member of St. Theresa of Avila Church in Rhodelia.

He is survived by his loving wife, Martha A. Speaks of Brandenburg; faithful canine companion, Sadie; daughter, Joey Shay Speaks of Elizabethtown; three bonus boys: Billy (Tammy) Turner of Elizabethtown, Brad (Jessica) Hurley of Melbourne, KY, and Adam (Kathy) Hurley of Siesta Key, FL; 7 sisters: Molly (Harold) Fackler of Brandenburg, Anna Mary (Bruce) Gaylord of Houston, TX, Martha Jean (Larry) Severs of Union Star, KY, Lou Ann Bryant of Brandenburg, Mariam Ciesielski of Mooleyville, KY; Ginny Speaks of Louisville, KY, and Julia (Ricky) Barr of Brandenburg; 3 brothers: James “Jimmy” Speaks of Payneville, KY, John (Margaret) Speaks of Hardinsburg, KY, and Sam (Missy) Speaks of Union Star; 9 grandchildren: Jace Bridgewaters, Finn Rainey, Caleb Hurley, Bray R. Hurley, Ashleigh Turner, Craig Turner, Emily Turner, Matthew Turner, and Christen Speaks; and 5 great-grandchildren: Aalijah, Kaleb, Jonah, Lola, and Cora.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 12, 2020 at 11:00 AM from St. Theresa of Avila Church in Rhodelia, KY with burial to follow in St. Theresa Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 11, 2020, from 2:00 – 5:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 – 11:00 AM at the church. A Prayer Service will be held Friday, December 11 at 5:00 PM at the church.
