Larry E. Frakes

Larry E. Frakes, 78, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2020, surrounded by his devoted wife of 53 years and his three children.

Larry was born October 13, 1942, in Glendale, Ohio, the son of Leslie and Ruby (Patterson) Frakes. Larry spent his childhood in Vine Grove, KY, helping his father build their family home and run the family gas station.

Larry graduated from Vine Grove High School in 1960 and would go on to serve 4 years in the United States Navy as a boiler room operator on the USS Oriskany. Larry was humble about his service but spent that time serving in many different cities and countries.

Larry was united in marriage to Evelyn Marie Winchester on August 19, 1967. They shared 53 wonderful years and showed their three children the importance of love, loyalty, and dedication to another person no matter what circumstances might come their way.

Larry worked for Henry Vogt Machine Company for 39 years as a powerhouse operator, and later working in maintenance, until retiring in October of 2004. He believed in working hard and persevering through the daily pain he endured from his 50 year battle with Crohn’s Disease. He always put his family first. Larry was very proud of his wife, three children, and four granddaughters, and could always be found spending time with one or all of them. He rarely missed a basketball, football, baseball, or softball game, dance recital, art show, marching band competition, band concert, or graduation.

Larry loved his cat, Sally, and taking care of his koi fish pond in his back yard. He also enjoyed camping on The River, fishing (and he always caught the biggest fish!), watching NCIS, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune, being handy and building things, and eating ice cream. He loved the simple things in life and perfectly embodied the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Frakes; his three children, Shanan (Mark) Niemann of Louisville, KY, Kyle (Michelle) Frakes, of Louisville, KY, and Beth (Nick) Partain, of Owensboro, KY; his four grandchildren, Melody (Steven) Partain, Ally Niemann, Savannah Frakes, and Ruby Partain; his brother, Darold (Helen) Frakes; sisters, Elaine (Mike) Youravich, and Darlene Bieber; brother-in-law, Jack Whelan; 5 step-grandchildren; and a number of adoring nieces, nephews, and additional brothers and sisters in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Ruby Frakes; a brother, Harold Frakes; two sisters, Pee Wee Corbett and Lynette Whelan; and brothers-in-law, Mike Bieber, Gene Corbett, and Billy Cecil.

Funeral Services for the immediate family will be Thursday, December 10, 2020, at Chism Family Funeral Home in Vine Grove, KY. Graveside service will immediately follow at North Hardin Memorial Gardens. A larger celebration of life for Larry will be held once it is safer to do so.

Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, and the Louisville Male High School Band.
