Local Billing Mix Up

Submitted Article

Meade Physicians, Inc. of Brandenburg, Kentucky, has advised some patients of an incident that may affect their personal information.

On October 7, 2020, Meade began receiving phone calls from patients who said they had received bills containing information related to other patients. The information included the names of the other patients, times and types of treatment, and insurance information.

Meade retained a law firm to investigate. That investigation determined that a contractor hired to mail the practice’s bills retained a sub-contractor to perform one mailing in early October. A malfunction caused bills to be addressed to one patient, but with information pertaining to another patient.

The contractor and sub-contractor have worked to correct the problem, which was limited to that single mailing. The incident affected around 695 patients.

Meade has received no information suggesting that any patient information has been used improperly. Even so, it has chosen to notify all potentially affected patients about the incident to be safe, and to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

“We take patient privacy seriously and are very sorry for any concern or inconvenience this incident has caused or may cause to anyone who has been affected,” said a spokesperson for Meade.

Written notification letters were mailed on December 7, 2020, to those clients who may have been affected. As an added precaution to help protect clients’ information from potential misuse, Meade Physicians has offered identity theft monitoring and restoration services through Kroll for a period of 12 months at no cost to those affected by the incident.

Those who believe they may have been affected by this incident may call Meade Physicians at its dedicated, toll-free incident response hotline at (833) 971-3246 for more information. Representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Central Time.
