Local youth leagues hoping to return to the diamond in 2021

This past Wednesday representatives from the Flaherty, Vine Grove, Rineyville, Fort Knox, Irvington, Brandenburg and Radcliff ballparks met to discuss the upcoming youth baseball and softball season for the Tri-County League at the Vine Grove City Hall.

The annual winter meeting is a time for the park leaders to come together to set dates for the start of the season and tournaments along with discussing, modifying and accepting the rules which govern the league.

Last year, everyone left the winter meeting oblivious to how much the world was about to change. Each park held signups, teams were picked and then COVID struck right as practice was set to begin. In the end, all parks agreed to cancel the 2020 season.

This year, everything is tentative depending upon pandemic guidelines. All seven parks are committed to getting the kids back on the field in 2021. Tri-County plans to start its season on May 3 with league tournaments starting the last week of June. With that being said, parents will play a huge role in whether the season happens or not, and their patience and cooperation is needed more than ever.

Things will be different for sure. Park leaders will have to make tough decisions, often week by week. As of right now, things like an Opening Day Parade aren’t looking that great. Whatever this season does or doesn’t look like, parents will be crucial in ensuring that it is a success by doing their best to comply with the rules each park puts in place to safely allow our youth to return to the diamond.

Flaherty Community Ball Park will have three signups dates on February 13, 20 and 27 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on each of those Saturdays at the Flaherty Fire Department. The leagues are for ages 4-16 for both boys and girls. Children must be 4 years old on April 1 to play.

As of print, Brandenburg’s fast pitch sign ups had not been set. When those are announced, we will share them.

There is also a baseball league at Meade Olin Park. They are sanctioned through Cal Ripken Baseball which is separate from the Tri-County League. For those interested in playing in that league, signups are done completely online from now until February 28 for ages 4-15. Their website is
