Law enforcement officials have arrested a man after he allegedly entered a home and groped a minor resident as she slept.
According to the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 5 a.m. on Nov. 12, Ernest Popham, 39, of Union Star, entered a home in Webster through an unsecured door. Upon entering, Popham sat down on the end of the couch in the living room, near the feet of a female minor resident. The resident, upon feeling the unfamiliar touching, grabbing, and squeezing of her breast on top of her sports bra, woke up in a “shocked state of mind,” according to the report. She screamed and noticed Popham sitting at the end of the couch.
She stated that she punched and kicked him several times in an attempt to get away, and she immediately ran into the bathroom while screaming for her mother, who was asleep upstairs. As she was running towards the bathroom, Popham raised up from the couch and pulled up his blue jeans. When asked what he was doing and why he was inside her house, Popham allegedly stated “I don’t know” on multiple occasions.
The mother advised that Popham had helped move a couch into their home approximately three weeks ago. She also stated that she found a black baseball cap in front of the couch where the victim’s head would have been. The hat was seized and retained as evidence.
When arrested and advised of his legal rights, Popham rendered a verbal statement admitting to the offense. He stated that he entered the house, dropped his pants, removed his boots, sat on the couch, exposed himself, masturbated and touched her body. During the interview Popham was shown the hat that was found, and he verified it belonged to him.
Popham was charged with second-degree burglary, voyeurism, and first-degree indecent exposure.
