Well, fall has arrived. There were weeks, not to long ago, I was wanting and waiting for those cool nights and they are finally here. Waiting can be one of the hardest things in life. Whether it is a child waiting for Christmas morning; a senior about to graduate and waiting for the right job offer; or someone who is waiting to hear from a doctor about the results of a test, waiting is hard.

Sometimes waiting is hard because you know what is coming and you are so excited, you are anticipating what is going to happen, because you know. There are other times waiting is hard because there is uncertainty, and you just don’t know what is going to happen or how things are going to go.

As I think about faith, I want to say that maybe faith is waiting with anticipation. Faith is believing something is going to happen, be, come about. Faith doesn’t mean we know all the how’s, or the when’s, but there is an ultimate what.

If I could share a word of encouragement with you today it would be this: Have a faith that anticipates, that waits with anticipation. This is what allows us to stand firm when the unexpected happens, the unwelcome comes, the unwanted shows up, and the uncertain lies ahead. We know, we look and wait with anticipation. We are called to have the faith like Abraham who “against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations” (Romans 4:18). Against all hope, we still hope.

So let me end with these encouraging words from the Psalmist. “We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield” (Psalm 33:20). Keep looking to not just what you know lies ahead, but to the one who holds it all, is with you in it all, and is making a way through it all, to the very end.
