Minister’s Corner

William “Happy” Chandler

Rock Haven Baptist Church

In January 1960, a few days before he was to be inaugurated, president-elect John F. Kennedy invited Rev. Billy Graham to join him at the Kennedy’s Palm Beach compound for a round of golf. As they were driving back from the golf course, the president-elect turned to Graham to ask, “Do you believe Jesus Christ is coming back to earth again?” Somewhat surprised by the sudden nature of the question, Graham nevertheless responded, “Yes, sir, I do.” Kennedy paused for a moment and then responded, “All right, explain it to me.” For several minutes, Graham had the opportunity to explain to the soon-to-be chief executive of the United States about the reality of Christ’s promise to return in person to earth.

Three years later, the President was assassinated in Dallas. During Kennedy’s funeral, a portion of the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians was read. Here Paul tells us that there will be a generation who is “alive” and will be “caught up” to meet the Lord Jesus even as those who have died in Christ will rise again from their graves to join them (1 Thess. 4:16-17). Jesus tells us not only to believe to be certain of it. He also tells us to be ready by trusting in Him for salvation.

In John’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that despite the chaotic world around us, He has overcome it by His sacrifice and resurrection (John 16:33). He reminds His disciples and those who call Him Savior that He has prepared an eternal home for them (John 14:2-3). Jesus also tells us no one knows what day that will happen (Matthew 24:36-42), but that it will happen. What if it should happen soon? Are you prepared?
