Nancy Aurora Revilla Powell

Nancy Aurora Revilla Powell, 89, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away at home with her family by her side on Saturday, August 27, 2022 after a beautiful life devoted to family, helping others, cooking, shopping, dancing, and latin music.

Born on May 12, 1933 in Springfield, Illinois to Esteban & Karleen (Peek) Revilla, Nancy was native to the United States, but her heart and youth were tethered to Mexico. As a child she traveled back and forth between Mexico City and Dallas, Texas with her parents’ tire business. Nancy regularly recounted stories of Mexico City high society, ice cream with the President of Mexico’s son, late night mariachi serenades from suitors and swimming with stingrays in the ocean off of Acapulco.

As an adult, Nancy married and had three children (Raul, Patricia & Alexander) with Raul Rojas before separating. On a train ride from Mazatlán, Mexico to Los Angeles with her children, she met Robert Powell of Brandenberg, Kentucky, and married on October 29, 1960 in Fullerton, California. They soon had one child of their own (Denise) before moving to settle their family permanently in Louisville, Kentucky.

In Louisville, Nancy was instrumental in establishing the Latin American Club with fellow Spanish speaking friends that shared her passion for music and dancing. At the Latin American Club, Nancy proudly shared her talent and adoration for the dance floor with her beloved father, Esteban. Nancy participated in several Latin American Weekends at the Belvedere and was a wonderful organizer for numerous Latin American Fashion Shows. With an immense heart, she also volunteered her talents as an interpreter for immigrants at the Shelbyville Courthouse to help latin families in need.

A woman of everlasting love, faith and fun, Nancy exuberated life and enchanted all who had the good fortune to meet her. Nancy loved birds, especially hummingbirds and gardening, wielding a green thumb. She loved to cook for family and friends and amassed a library’s worth of cookbooks. Nancy was a natural host, who loved to entertain her friends and family with parties and holiday celebrations. She will be remembered by her loved ones for her beauty, kindness, elegance, her remarkable politeness and pleasantries; for thinking in Spanish, for gracefully failing to interpret Mexican expressions into English, and for her distinction as an angelic force of positivity.

She is preceded in death by her Father, Esteban Revilla, Mother, Karleen Revilla; Brothers, Steve Revilla Jr. and Ronald Revilla; and her Sons, Alexander Powell and Raul Rojas.

Nancy is survived by her loving family, Husband, Robert Powell, Daughters, Denise (Powell) Peña, Patricia (Powell) Hudson; Grandchildren; Robert Boles, Justin (Sara) Soforo, Brian (Tamzin) Powell, Sean Hudson, Maria (Ahmad) Mayo, Roseanne (Lee) Hill, Crystal (Neville) Grant and seven Great-Grandchildren.

As per her wishes Nancy was cremated and a private family service and Catholic mass will be held in her honor. She will be missed by the many that loved her. We will cherish our precious memories with her, celebrate her life and rejoice that she is now at peace. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Nancy’s memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
