Nancy Jean Norton Mays


Nancy Jean Norton Mays, age 89, of Webster, KY, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Breckinridge Memorial Hospital Nursing Facility in Hardinsburg, KY surrounded by her family.

Nancy was born March 2, 1932, near Garfield, KY in her grandparent’s home. She was the daughter of the late Elijah V. and Cora May McCubbins Norton. Her husband, Joseph A. Mays; brothers, Gilbert E. and Harold V. Norton; sister, Genevieve Meador; daughter-in-law, Diane Mays; and great-grandson, Zachary Chappell also preceded her in death.

Nancy married the late Joseph A. Mays on December 30, 1950, and they lived in the Webster Community where they farmed and raised their family. She graduated from Irvington High School as a member of the Class of 1951. Nancy was the anchor of her family and was known to always have an open door to anyone in the community. She was a strong woman who could farm, garden, take care of her household and helped anyone in need. She enjoyed country music and hymns, collecting family treasures, flowers, and visiting with her family and friends. She instilled a work ethic into her children, to appreciate what they had and to make the best of each situation in life.

She is survived by her four children: William Joseph Mays of Webster, Edna Jean (Tony) Hobbs of Hardinsburg, Gayla Sue (Nolan) Benoit of Orange, TX, and Carol Ann (Eddie Robinson) Bland of Harned; 6 grandchildren: William David (Anne) Mays, James Bryan (Cindy) Mays, Joshua Neil (Lamanda) Hobbs, Thomas Dale (Kate) Hobbs, Carla Ann Chappell, and Lisa Marie (Shaun) Simpson; 14 great-grandchildren: Zachary and Lola Mays, Xavi and Nathan Arriola, Lillian and Daisy Mays, Camden and Claudia Hobbs, Adeline and Eleanor Hobbs, Taylor and Jacob Chappell, Dylan Simpson, and Kaitlyn Simpson (Michael) French; and 3 great-great grandchildren: Maximus and Jakobi Hupp and Laiken Chappell; sister, Anna Lou (Joe) Lawson of Brandenburg, KY; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at 2:00 PM EDT from the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home in Irvington, KY with burial to follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family has requested that masks be worn during the visitation and funeral.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 9, 2021, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM EDT and after 9:00 AM Wednesday at the funeral home.
