I wrote one of the hardest stories I have ever written last Monday about a 17-year-old boy, who by all accounts was a blessing to anyone who ever knew him, that tragically lost his life far too soon. As I looked at my own young son, I wept for that family. No parent should have to deal with what they now have to.
I sat watching College Game Day with my son Saturday, getting ready to watch UK and UT battle it out on the gridiron. I can’t stand the University of Alabama, but I fought back tears once again, watching the story of an 8-year-old boy who loves the Crimson Tide who has his whole life ahead of him but was just diagnosed with a rare brain tumor that gives him only a 25 percent chance of surviving. He went from the baseball field to brain surgery in a blink of an eye with a terrible prognosis to boot.
So, just stop. If your cause can’t let you treat those who don’t agree with you with decency, it was a lost cause before it ever got started. I don’t care about your Republican candidate or your Democrat one. I don’t care about Black Lives Matter or All Lives Matter. I don’t care about what you do in your bed. I don’t care about Prolife or Prochoice anymore either. All I care about is being able to raise my son in a world where I can teach him to love any and every one we come in contact with until they prove they don’t deserve it anymore and enjoy our short time the good Lord allows us to have, walking this beautiful Earth.
I’m tired of being told that I have two options to choose from, and if I choose wrong, I’m a racist or sexist or homophobe or xenophobe when it’s a forced choice between the lesser of two evils. I’m tired of being told I am the problem because of a lack of melanin in my skin. I’m tired of my son being told he will be toxic just because he can stand in a bathroom. I’m tired of living in a country, that all be it imperfect, offers an opportunity for anyone who has a fire in their belly regardless of skin color, sex, religion or orientation but is made out to be the worst thing that has ever happened to this planet. Even a former stripper can become a millionaire singing one of the most degrading songs about the female gender I’ve ever heard which is at the top of the charts somehow, and she still gets to interview a presidential candidate and succeed in this country.
So, please just stop. Trump, Biden, global warming or nothing else will destroy this great constitutional republic experiment called America. It’s stood up to and defeated far worse problems than it faces today. The only thing that will destroy it is we the people. Us fighting over mole hills while wolves stand at our doors, waiting for the right moment for our great country to divide itself enough to finally fall, will. We aren’t perfect just as I am not perfect. We have some ugly moments in our past just as I have some ugly moments in my past. You aren’t born into greatness; you stumble and fall, never giving up, and work yourself into it. This country wasn’t born into perfection; it just continues to work towards it (and at a far greater pace than any other country ever has). It will never be perfect, though, because to be human is to be imperfect. So stop picking at every scab this country has from where it has stumbled or even fell, or the wounds will never heal.
Love your neighbor as yourself. Quit focusing on the few issues that divide us and stare long and hard into the love and commonality that unites us all. I started this talking about weeping for two families who are facing mountains. It’s time for the rest of us, myself included, to quit crying over the mole hills we pass over each day. Love not fear; love not division; love and only LOVE will ever set us free!!!
