Senior spotlight: Donovan Young Matthew

By Rich Fairman

With Kentucky High School Athletic Association suspending all high school spring sports seasons until further notice, it means that our Meade County athletes that participate in Softball, Baseball, Tennis, and Track and Field might not have the opportunity to celebrate their seniors. So, from time to time, the Messenger will spotlight these athletes. I sent a questionnaire out in order to find out about them to share with the community. This week’s spotlight is focused on:  Donovan Young Matthew. Also known as Donnie or Don Don.  Donovan is the son of Jason and Hannah Matthew and is a current member of the Greenwave Track & Field team (6yrs). He was also a member of the Greenwave Football team (3yrs), Buck Groove Baptist youth group (6yrs) and HOSA (2yrs). MCM: Which sport do you enjoy the most? DM: “I most definitely enjoy track the most. I have met my best friends through it and made so many memories. I have grown as a person because of track and field and I will love this sport the rest of my life.” MCM: What are your plans after high school? DM: “I am going to run for Campbellsville University on a track scholarship while studying to become an athletic trainer.” MCM: Where do you see yourself in ten years? DM: “In a perfect world, I would like to be an athletic trainer for Meade county high school, and also coach a summer track team.” MCM: What qualities do you possess that will get you there? DM: “I am a leader, and if I am determined to do something then I will get that job done however long it takes.” MCM: Do you have any favorite high School memories? DM: “Getting the 8th grade MVP award for track, and most definitely meeting all of my friends that have come and gone. The memories I have will be with me the rest of my life.” MCM: What will you miss the most after you graduate from MCHS? DM: “The atmosphere. I will miss seeing my coaches and my friends everyday. I will also miss being in the place I’ve grown up in my whole life.” MCM: Which class have you enjoyed the most at MCHS? DM: “Coach Garner’s history class. I liked that class in particular because Coach Garner is an extremely amazing teacher and he knows how to explain things well. It was also really nice to have my head coach as a teacher. And to sit right by his desk so I could bug him when I needed to talk about track.” MCM: Whom do you admire and why? DM: “My dad. He works really hard for our family and he has helped me become who I am today. If it weren’t for him pushing me, I wouldn’t be nearly as good of an athlete as I am today.” MCM: If you could have one wish, what would it be? DM: “To have my season back. I was planning on breaking records this year.” MCM: Do you have any other hobbies/interests outside of school? DM: “I like to ride longboards and I like to play basketball with friends.” DM: “I love Meade County and I’m glad I’ve gotten to spend my life here. I honestly love this place and I will always be a Greenwave. I’d also like to thank my coaches for being amazing and helping me when I have fallen down, literally when I have fallen down on the track.”
