September is Library Card Sign-up Month!

By Brenna Cooper, MCPL

Celebrate Library Card Sign-up month by getting your very first library card! A Meade County Public Library card is your bridge to the future and gives you access to an incredible array of free resources. If you already have a card, celebrate by spreading the news and telling everyone how much you love the library! Then come borrow your favorite titles and say hi. We’re always happy to see you!

With a library card, you can borrow up to 15 items from the Library’s collection, which has over 52,000 titles to choose from. The library has books, audiobooks, music CDs, DVDs, TV series, video games (for Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox), tablets, and more. You can visit the library in person to peruse our genealogy room, a special collection of books curated around local history and families. The Library has 7 computers that you can use, as well as printing (10 cents a page for black and white, 25 cents for color), scanning, and faxing ($1 a page).

With your library card, you have access to two online libraries, Hoopla and Libby, both of which have their own enormous collections. Libby by Overdrive is part of Kentucky Libraries Unbound, a statewide digital library that offers ebooks, magazines, movies, and audiobooks. Some titles can be checked out by an unlimited number of people at the same time. Books on Libby are available for download on to any device, including older readers. On Hoopla, you can browse through books, comic, movies, TV series, music, and audiobooks. For now, the limit has been raised to 15 titles per library card per month, but they also have a ‘Bonus Borrows’ collection of items that do not count toward your monthly total. There are no holds or wait lists on Hoopla, but you do need to have a web browser or the app to use it.

With your library card, you can sign up for any of the many library programs at www.meadereads.org. There are craft programs for adults including Artsy Craftsy classes, Card Making, Cricut, and Sewing classes. There are children’s programs for different age groups including story times, Kids Unlimited, and special program walks. We also have fitness programs every day of the week with Chair Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Cardio Fusion, Strength and Tone, and (returning in September) Zumba! Some of these programs are open to everyone, but some require registration: to register, all you need is your library card.

To get a library card, you will need to bring your current Meade County Driver’s License or Active Duty Military ID. All minors signing up need be accompanied a legal guardian with a qualifying ID. Signing up is easy and only takes a few minutes. While you can get a library card at any time, celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month is a great reason to stop waiting and get one today.

The Meade County Public Library is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.. You can call us with any questions at 270-422-2094, visit our website at www.meadereads.org, or come see us (and get that card!). Happy Reading!
