SGT. (Ret) Joseph A. Whelan, age 80, of Brandenburg, KY passed away Sunday, April 4, 2021, at his residence. Sgt. Whelan was retired from the Kentucky State Police and had served as a Bailiff for the Meade County Sheriff’s Department. He liked woodworking, going out to eat, and meeting people, but, most of all spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and cat.
Mr. Whelan was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Leroy “Doc” and Georgia Lee Manning Whelan; and his wife, Donna Ruark Whelan. He is survived by two children, Leslie Jenkins and her husband, Shawn and Samantha Whelan; two grandchildren, Joseph Jenkins and his wife, Lori and Jessica Jenkins; two great-grandchildren, William and Charlotte Jenkins; two sisters, Alice Earle Mahon and her husband, Danny and Geraldine Hager and her husband, Porter; and many, many, nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, April 9, 2021, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Brandenburg, KY with Rev. Trumie Culpepper Elliott officiating. Visitation will be at Hager Funeral Home from 4:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday and after 9:00 AM Friday at the church. A second visitation will be held Friday, April 16, 2021, at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden, KY from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM with a committal service to follow at Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge, KY.
