For the first time ever, Stuart Pepper Middle School band students were invited to attend Western Kentucky University’s Honor Band Clinic for middle schoolers. Last Friday was WKU’s 6th Annual performance with the Middle School Honors Band Clinic, and five talented 8th grade SPMS band students were chosen to participate. The students went to an all-day event to learn new techniques, rehearse songs most of them had never played before, watch the WKU Symphonic Band play, and then perform themselves in the evening. They were directed by guest clinician Director Andrew Lynn, who has been the Band Director at Stewarts Creek Middle School in Smyrna, Tenn. since the school opened in 2006. Lynn also founded and co-directs the Rising Stars Band Camp, which is a summer program for beginning band students. Lynn led 100 8th grade students, including our five SPMS attendees, in three songs: Afterburn by Randall D. Standridge, With Liberty For All by Ken Harris and Comet Ride by Brian Balmages. Pictured left to right are the five students who were chosen and what instrument they play: Zachary Johnson (Euphonium/Baritone), Emma Mills (Flute), Aurora Green (Flute), Aubrie Leo (Bass Clarinet) and Amelia McGee (French Horn).
