Summer Reading with the Meade County Public Library

By Brenna Cooper, MCPL

We have had to make tremendous changes to the way we do things these past months, and we were not sure if we would be able to have a Summer Reading program this year. Luckily, and thanks to all the hard work our staff have put in, we are doing Summer Reading… online! This year’s Summer Reading will take place from June 1st to July 31st and is for all ages. We will have programs, stories, performances, challenges, prizes, crafts, activities, and more! Everything will be available to you remotely and in multiple ways while we stay healthy and safe.

On our website, MeadeReads.org, under the ‘Children’s’ tab, you can access and print activities, reading logs, and challenges. You can also participate in the Super Readers program, which goes on all year long, under the same tab. Our website has dozens of links to free resources you can use at any time, from anywhere, including our two digital libraries, Hoopla and Kentucky Libraries Unbound, and an online portal for signing up for a MCPL card.

Beanstack is an online reading and challenge log hosted by the Library. You can track how many books you’ve read, complete challenges and activities, and earn badges. You can set up an account by downloading the mobile app or by visiting meadereads.org. After you set up your account, you can add multiple readers to it (you can manage your kids’ reading challenges all in one spot!).

Craft kits will be handed out at the Library near the book drop on June 2nd from 10-11:30am. We’ve created craft kits to help fuel your creativity all summer long! These kits are designed for kids ages 3 and up and contain materials and supplies to last throughout the summer. Additional kits may be handed out at a later date as needed. Have kiddos younger than 3? We will have modified kits available for our youngest readers. Please indicate at pick up if you have a young child that would like some creative toys of their own.

Zoom is an online meeting room software we are using to host online programs and classes. It is easy to use and doesn’t require an account. To join us on Zoom for any program, go to our website, meadereads.org, and click on the ‘Event Calendar’ button. Select the program you want to attend and the information on how to join will be in the description. On a mobile device or tablet, you will need to download the app. On a laptop or desktop, you will be able to join in your web browser, or follow the prompts to download the computer app.

Get social with us! We will be on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all summer long with fun, games, programs, contests, information, and more. We would love to see your creations this summer! Tag us anywhere in your public posts @MeadeReads with hashtags #ImagineYourStory and #MCPLSummer2020

We are excited and eager to share all these new and amazing resources with you! We know it can be overwhelming at times. If you get stuck, need help, or just have some questions, we are here and more than happy to lend a hand! We miss you all so much, and any time we can hear from you or lend assistance, we’re glad to. You can call us during the week at 270-422-2094, comment on any social media post, or visit our website at meadereads.org. Happy Summer Reading!
