On Sept 17, the SPMS Ladywave softball team hosted the Ohio County Middle School Lady Eagles in their only home game of the season at Meade Olin Park. It has been hard for the Ladywaves to find games, or teams to play this season as many school shave opted out of the season due to COVID, but Head Coach Penny Reece has shopped around to find tournaments and other teams that wanted to play. So far this season SPMS has not lost a game which Ohio County wanted to change.
Both teams traded hits at the plate with Ohio County getting on the board first after an early a pair of singles that allowed them to get a run across the plate to take the early lead in the bottom of the first. SPMS bounced back in the bottom of the second on an errant throw after catcher Addi Allen laid down a bunt that moved players around the bases, which allowed them to bring a pair of runs, taking a one run lead. In the top of the third Ohio County tied the game with another pair of singles.
Both teams had scoring chances in the fourth and Ohio County had another chance in the top of the fifth to bring in a run, but SPMS defense buckled down to stope them. In the bottom of the fifth, Kennedy Ledford led off by reaching first on a throwing error from Ohio County’s second basemen, then stole second to get into scoring position. On the third pitch Kaelyn Ledford seen, she connected for a line drive shot to left field. The hit was enough to bring her sister, Kennedy Ledford, to score, ending the game with a walk off single to keep their undefeated season alive.
